Marvel at the sea stacks made from volcanic rock that jut out from the ocean. Enjoy learning the mythical tale about their resident trolls.

A folk legend surrounds the mysterious Reynisdrangar, a set of basalt ocean stacks off the southern coast of Iceland. The jagged black rocks stand in front of Black BeachOpens in a new window under the looming Reynisfjall Mountain. It is said that the morning sun turned three trolls into stone as they vainly attempted to dock their ship. Now, see them standing in perpetuity as a scenic wonder for beachgoers.

Visit the fascinating volcanic sand of Black Beach for a close view of the rock formations in the ocean. Reynisdrangar consists of three large pointed rocks, which represent the trolls, and a smaller one behind them. Watch the white foam of the stormy ocean waves attack the columns, gradually eroding them further.

From the beach, clamber over rocks to the shadow of the giant stacks. Watch out for sliding and falling stones. Cliffs to the west of the town provide the best views from above. Capture photos of the three trolls and their little brother.

The wind is particularly strong in this part of Iceland, typically some of the country’s wettest area. Make sure to bring layers of clothing and be extra careful on the edges of the cliffs. The views of the ocean stacks beside the turbulent ocean and a black coastline are exceptionally dramatic.

Enjoy a picnic on the cliffs, but protect your food from the grasps of nesting puffins and other birds. Go beachcombing along Black Beach for shiny and crumbly volcanic rocks.

The peninsula of DyrholaeyOpens in a new window neighbors the beach and the stacks. Admire its intriguing geological formations, such as its iconic arch. Stroll through the pleasant region to find the lighthouse.

Reynisdrangar juts into the Atlantic Ocean just to the south of Vik I MyrdalOpens in a new window. Follow the long route that covers the southern region of the country to reach the town and make your way to Black Beach.
