A very special experience awaits in this prehistoric art gallery and sacred site deep within a cave, where ancient engravings mark the place where Paleolithic people were entombed.

Artworks spanning thousands of years adorn the walls of the Grotta del Romito. Explore this remarkable cave and learn why archaeologists flocked to this site in the 1960s. Peer up at stalactites and weave between stalagmites as you discover this prehistoric treasure trove. Check out the adjoining Antiquarium della Grotta del Romito to learn about the cave’s history and significance.Archaeologists believe humans occupied these caves up to 26,000 years ago the artworks were etched into the walls up to 23,000 years ago.

Follow the boardwalk that descends into the grotto and make your way into the cave. As you delve into the craggy limestone cavern, you’ll find stunning geomorphologic formations on the floor and ceiling. These stalagmites and stalactites hint at the cave’s ancient age and give it a hallowed atmosphere.

Continue exploring and watch for figures and pictures etched into the stone. You’ll see bulls depicted in several different designs, which are some of the most advanced Paleolithic realist artworks ever found. Admire these anatomically extraordinary artworks and imagine the prehistoric person who would have worked the ancient stone.

Excavations in the 1960s exposed three burial sites in the Grotta del Romito. Dating back at least 11,000 years, these skeletons were buried in pairs and provide compelling evidence of filial relationships and significant burial rituals in the region’s ancient people. Check out the displays of skeleton replicas and learn about the real skeletal figures, which were moved to Florence for study.

Outside the cave, visit the Antiquarium della Grotta del Romito to learn more about the significance of the grotto’s excavations and ancient artifacts. Kids can explore the adjoining farmstead, which is used as an educational workshop. If you’re hungry, get a table at the nearby restaurant and try local Calabrese dishes. The grotto site is also equipped with hotel accommodations.

The Grotta del Romito is located about a 25-minute drive north from Papasidero. Take care driving the windy mountain trail through the region. The site is open to visitors daily. There is a fee for admission.
