Rosegg Castle

This elegant white castle offers plenty to entertain kids as well as adults, as its sprawling grounds include a maze and even a small zoo.

Bring your family to Rosegg Castle for a day out that will keep you as well as the kids entertained. Get lost in the maze, see ibex roaming in the wildlife park and meet the wax figures who now inhabit the castle’s grand rooms. Adults traveling without children will also find this historic site worth visiting. The building itself is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture, the grounds are immaculately maintained and the museum inside the castle offers an engaging insight into the history of the local aristocracy.

Rosegg Castle was built in the 18th century for the prince of Orsini-Rosenberg. It lacks the turrets and ornate statues often found in noble residences of the period and its exterior is in fact relatively understated. See if you can spot the often-noted Italian influences which feature in the architecture. Work started on the castle after the prince’s return from an extended stay in Tuscany and the building was inspired by his love for an Italian beauty named Madame Lucrezia.

Enter the castle and see a lavish and elaborate interior. It’s full of beautiful antiques and furnishings, many of which have belonged to the castle for centuries. Explore rooms paneled with the finest wood and ornamented with complex gilt features. And see the former owners of the house recreated in wax. Children will particularly love watching these life-size wax figures go about their business.

Set aside plenty of time to explore the extensive grounds of the castle. Play hide and seek in the wonderful hedge maze and visit the wildlife park to encounter over 400 species. Let your kids feed the small animals in the petting zoo area.

Visit Rosegg Castle between spring and fall, as the castle closes for the cold winter months. There is a small entrance fee. Be sure to allow yourself several hours to discover the many delights offered by this site, both indoors and out.
