The lakes, rivers and dramatic mountains surrounding this Lapland village are ripe for exploring year-round.
The ski resort of Rukatunturi is popular in winter for obvious reasons, with a mountain full of thrilling slopes and striking snowy scenery. Outside ski season, hiking and water-based activities top the agenda. Come in summer and explore the epic landscapes of northern Finland on foot, by bike or boat.
Escape to the wilderness of Oulanka National Park, a network of lake and hillside walking trails. Fit trekkers can attempt Karhunkierros, a long-distance route that stretches for 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of the village. The hills around Rukatunturi also feature mountain biking routes and horse-riding trails.
Hike up 1,640 feet (500 meters) to the Ruka Fell summit for panoramic views of the surrounding Kuusamo region. Walking tours leave from the village in Rukatunturi and can be booked in advance. Find out more at the Tourist Information Office in the village center.
Rafters seeking thrills should brave the white-water rapids of Kuusinkijoki River, while families can race along the gentler currents of the Kitkajoki River. For even more sedate water-based activities, paddle a canoe across one of the many lakes in the region or spend a day fishing on the quiet shores.
One of the winter highlights is the chance to see the aurora borealis, or northern lights, a natural phenomenon that casts colorful rays and light patterns across the night sky. Sign up for one of the snowmobile and dog sled expeditions, which leave from Rukatunturi and bring participants to the best viewing points.
Make the most of the long ski season in Lapland, which can run for around 200 days. Nursery slopes in the Rosa and Rudolf Snowpark are the perfect place for beginners. More capable skiers will enjoy the black runs on the Eturinteet slopes, which lead straight into the village.
Rukatunturi is about 30 minutes’ drive north of Kuusamo Airport. This airport has connections to Helsinki and other cities. Walkers will enjoy visiting in summer, when the long and light days provide ample time to explore and, some believe, an energy boost.
