Experience the peaceful atmosphere of Saint Martin’s Church and admire the impressive decor of its interior. Saint Martin’s Church was the first church’s built in Biarritz and thus is one of the city’s longest-standing landmarks. Originally constructed in the 12th century, it was restored and decorated in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Stand at the main entrance and check out the simple Gothic-style architecture of this community church. Step inside to feel an air of tranquility. Gaze up at the elegant arched nave and look for the assortment of religious icons that adorn the walls. Surrounding the altar is a collection of colourful and intricate stained-glass windows, most of which are from the 1800s and 1900s.
Look for the small graveyard adjacent to the church. The centuries-old tombstones provide a poignant reminder of Biarritz’s medieval beginnings.
Saint Martin’s Church is situated less than a 10-minute drive from Biarritz’s city centre. If arriving by car, you can park for free on the street outside the church’s entrance. Public buses stop near to the church, which is about a 20-minute walk from the Old Harbour (Port Vieux). Combine your visit with a tour of the Asiatica Museum of Asian Art (Asiatica Musée d’Art Oriental) or relax amid the tree-lined Jardin Public. Both are less than a 10-minute walk away.
The church is open daily and mass takes place on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and weekends. There is no admission fee. This is an active place of worship so dress appropriately and be respectful when visiting.
