Historic King William Riverwalk – Rustic Exclusive

Summary:
Your 19th-century Cottage, “Lavanderie”, rests in a private gated garden in the heart of San Antonio. You will find the experience more of a peaceful escape in the deep woods than what this gem is -a unique retreat adjacent to your world-famous Riverwalk and easy stroll from all the City offers. You are a 10 min walk from the Alamo and a 1/2 mile from the Blue Star Arts Complex or Convention Center. You will find it a romantic retreat or solo adventure. Modern fun in a historic setting!!

The Space:
Your stay at Lavanderie is unlike any experience you will find in San Antonio. You will be right in the heart of the city and you will find no shortage of things to do, see, and experience - from historic and the earliest days of the San Antonio to sleek and modern. Your rustic and private cottage, is located on the estate grounds of the Gustav Giesecke House in the King William Historic District of San Antonio. Perfect for your romantic getaway and something other than your traditional boring hotel room. You will experience no elevators or flights of stairs, although come prepared for a bit of a cross the yard hike to your cabin. You may be wise to come in comfortable shoe and with a light handy to navigate the yard after dark to get back to your home away from home. You will find your cottage has a rustic charm and your stay is more akin to a stay in a log cabin in the forest than a stay in a century-old guest house in the middle of the city. At the same time, we strive to make it as comfortable as possible and keep it fully appointed with all the linens, towels, soaps and shampoos and other amenities you would expect from a hotel stay while keeping your experience entirely unique!

Once your booking is confirmed, we send you a SECURE link to our pre-arrival portal where you will verify ID and occupancy (like at a hotel) without all the handing of ID back and forth. (see details below)

Your bedroom fills the majority of the original 'wash house' structure. You will enjoy your nightly repose on a queen-sized bed with an extra soft pillow top mattress. You will notice the original pine wood floors still run throughout the space which includes the bathroom and walk-in closet. To modernize the space a little, you will find the original claw foot tub has a wrap around shower curtain enclosure to allow you the option of a shower, in addition to possibility of an 'old western'-style long soak in the claw foot tub. Oversized towels and standard bath amenities are provided for your stay.

Your cottage, “the wash house”, is what remains of the Victorian frame home and wash house build here in 1889 by Gustav Giesecke and his bride, Anna Francisca Groos. Their original frame home was demolished in 1915 when the couple expanded the property and built the large, brick, two-story, Arts-and-Crafts house you will become familiar with as the 'main house' and still stands on the estate. The original Victorian wash house was converted into your guest cottage with the addition of your sitting room and kitchen area in 1950, and then renovated again in 2010.

You will find this addition snug, yet enjoyable space relax with coffee in the morning or with a glass of your favorite beverage in the evening after a day exploring San Antonio. Your living / dining space includes a small but 'mighty' kitchen, well enough appointed to cook up a reasonable meal if you are so inclined and a 32" flat panel TV with free streaming services. If you travel with your own entertainment, the TV fully supports connecting a Firestick or other devices via HDMI and USB.

Your kitchen is small and complete with refrigerator, range/oven, microwave... and all the necessary cooking and dining utensils, Keurig (for your morning / evening warm beverage convenience), plates, glasses, etc. to enjoy your own home-cooked meals - if you choose to cook. You will be staying directly across the street from the entrance to the world renowned 'Riverwalk' and with restaurants serving all varieties of cuisine just a short walk away you can go an entire visit without using the stove once. Your parking is free, however, you will want to be aware that you can only park on the street and your parking time between 7 am and 6 pm, Monday through Friday, is restricted by the city and the King William Historic District. Overnight is generally not a problem, unless you are late to bed and are not up by 9 am to move your car before the city makes their 1st check. We will help you stay in compliance so your parking remains free.

Since 1889, only two families have owned the home and grounds for your stay. You will see magnificent pecan and cypress trees as you walk the grounds, these are believed to be centuries old. Native plants fill the lush garden surrounding Lavanderie where you will be staying. These plants provide a haven for wild birds so you will likely see many varieties during your stay. Your cottage is a small, only 500 sq. ft, rustic retreat for you, or you and a loved one.

If Lavanderie is available on dates you are looking at, grab that booking fast! Our guests come back often and are staying for longer periods each time, you will find the same when you experience a stay in the cottage. Open dates do not last long.

You will be staying in a very safe and historically significant neighborhood, feel free to walk the streets and admire the various historic homes. You are within easy walking distance to food, fun, everything really!

Unfortunately, and possibly because you have made us so popular with guests arriving to San Antonio, we have noticed a dramatic increase in fraudulent bookings. While we do not like doing anything that might be an extra burden on you when you are coming to visit us and relax, we put some additional safety procedures in place to ensure your safety, the safety of our home, and the safety of everyone during your stay. When you book, you understand that you will be required to provide your identifying documents through a secure 3rd party platform before we provide access to your space. These documents include (and may not be limited to) a government issued photo ID in your name (or the booking party) and an valid credit card issued in your name. This is the same process hotels use to provide for your safety. We pay for the same secure system used by hotels to validate guest age and ID on check in. You will pay no additional costs for this check, and your credit card *will not* be charged outside of the Terms and Conditions specified by the booking channel, we have made sure of this. A small authorization to 'Alamo City Stays' will be attempted by the 3rd party service -only- to determine the validity of the credit card information provided. Please note: An authorization is not a charge, no funds are transferred in an authorization. If you do not pass the initial ID verification, additional checks may be required. In the extremely rare circumstance that you are notified that you did not pass, -or- if you opt out of completing this check for the safety of all concerned. By reserving, and taking control of our space, you agree to cancel your active reservation within 24 hours of notification -and- release control of our space. Those releasing control of our space within 24 hours of such notification -WILL- be provided a full refund with our regrets. Those not releasing control of our space within 24 hours of such notification will be charged in accordance with the booking channel cancellation policy in effect at the time of the cancellation.

Guest Access:
You will have the entire cottage to yourself and full use of it 24 hours a day. Garden and grounds outside are shared with guests and visitors. You can come and go as you like. There's an electronic lock, so there are no keys for you to keep up with or worry about losing, but there is a combination lock on the privacy gate for added security - we'll provide you with the code to that. We recommend leaving the lock on the gate at all times just so you don't have to worry about losing it.

The Neighborhood:
Your retreat cottage sits in a private, gated garden, in one corner of the Gustav Giesecke estate in the elegant King William Historic District. The neighborhood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as one of San Antonio's oldest and most architecturally significant areas. The grand houses of this neighborhood were built by successful German immigrants on the land bordering the San Antonio River and formerly farmed by the Spanish missions. Right across the street you will arrive at one entrance to your world-famous San Antonio Riverwalk (on the San Antonio River) which offers shopping, dining and entertainment for all tastes. Feel free to stroll the area. Welcome to your perfect romantic escape!

Getting Around:
If you want to ride, taxis are available anytime and start around $15 to get anywhere else in town. I prefer to Uber. Once you are here, you are likely to find anything you want to do is within a short walk on the Riverwalk. Enjoy your stay!

Interaction with Guests:
It's likely you won't see me during your stay, which allows you more privacy and convenience. However, I'm here anytime you need to reach out. If you need anything or have questions, just send me a message and I'll be quick to respond.

Not Worth The Money - An Unsafe Mess
Firstly, parking is inconvenient. You have to park a block or more away so as not to get ticketed by the city. The property this building resides on is a mess. You practically walk through a cluttered jungle of overgrown landscaping, not to mention the mosquitoes and spiders hanging between trees and bushes you have to trudge between to get to our stay. The path is not clear to get to building nor well-lit. The most serious thing is that the lock on the door did not work. I read and re-read the directions sent on how to lock the door and followed them to a “T.” It still did not work. I had to prop the recliner between the door and one of the kitchen shelves to secure the door. Suffice it to say, we did not sleep well in an unsecured room. The lighting around the property is inadequate and unsafe. In a neighborhood like this near the River Walk, we expected better. We’ve stayed at older historical houses that are much nicer and cheaper per night than this. With the money, taxes, and fees we paid for one night, we could have gotten a standard hotel room right on the River Walk. We will not be returning to this place and will just book a room at a hotel on the River Walk.

Perfect location
We stayed two nights last weekend and enjoyed our little getaway. A historic building and a little quirky, but very welcoming and just steps from the riverwalk. We felt very safe there and it was a bargain for the location. The bottle of wine was a nice touch!

This little house is tucked into the corner of the yard. While it could use some interior updating it’s great for a night or two. The owner was a great communicator.

Cute, quaint getaway
I came with my friend for a girls trip. We had a lovely time in this garden cottage. I recommend arriving in the daytime if possible, there are two properties aside from the main house on this lot, and we got turned around looking for ours in the dark. We used one of the property’s available bikes for trail cruising. My friend said it was in good shape, if not a little tough at times without brakes. (Note we rode a long distance south, where it’s less flat). The host was very accommodating and responsive, and it was a great experience overall. I’d bring my foodie partner next time for the great restaurant access in walking distance nearby!

Great Experience
Fantastic location nestled among beautiful homes in the King Williams historic district. Located across the street from the quiet part of the riverwalk means the party part of the riverwalk is a quick walk but doesn't disrupt the quiet of your stay. It is great to come back to after a long day of sightseeing, partying or whatever the city of San Antonio has in store for you. The cabin itself is cozy. It was a little musty upon entrance, so for an asthmatic it might be a good idea to ask that the a/c be turned on before you arrive. The kitchen/living area is small. The refrigerator is extra small. You can't fit a bottle of wine in if there is anything else in there. Kitchen would be problematic if you plan to cook big meals. But why cook when you're in San Antonio? Go out to all the great restaurants in walking distance! The bathroom is vintage with a claw footed tub and small sink without counter space. The shower head left a little to be desired. We cleaned it and it was improved. We had two glitches while there. We needed lightbulbs replaced and it was handled within an hour of informing them . And we left our iPad behind. It was on its way to us via FedEx within 24 hours of our departure. Overall - a fantastic value for the price. A cozy retreat in a great location with responsive management. Thanks for a great week!

King William District stay
We enjoyed this property, especially the fact that the homeowner (?) was available to help us get in! (I misplaced the email with the information). We were more thrilled the next day, when we saw how close we were to the Riverwalk and other restaurants, and being able to walk downtown. Loved the historic houses around.

Great Location & Cozy Accommodations
This small home was perfect for 2. The location of this cute house makes walking and/or driving to tourist areas a piece of cake. Parking at the house was great as well. It is an older home and does have that older home scent. Overall, a great value for the location and price.

This little place could be so amazingly cute!
we enjoyed our stay. The neighborhood is amazing! This little house could be so cute and homey with only the slightest attention... as it was, it was sufficient. and so quirky we found it a fun challenge to figure how we would decorate it as we are both in the design field. The side of the dresser is missing...that's not quirky, just neglectful. cut some of the underbrush around the place. put the tv in the bedroom, move the kitchenette into the room with the storage boxes in it, vintage photos of the house and the neighborhood, make a cute sitting area outside, quick easy changes... stay here. location is great, people are kind and helpful. different and private.

Eerie Cottage
It wasnt really what i expected and the process of getting in and out can be a lot. The privacy area wasnt really private and windows all around and one of the windows face directly at the bed with no curtains. It was eerie and i just didnt feel comfortable or like i could relax. We only spent one night and found somewhere else to stay. Not a bad stay if you are into all that.

Nightmare
Worse nightmare ever. Do NOT do it. I would like to share the photos I took while there. You need at least 6 hands to get through the first locked gate. No pathway to follow through the unkept toy filled, construction debris filled dirt yard. An under fed cat may greet you. Coffee pot was so caked on I left it to soak while we took a walk. Once we returned it still couldn't be scrubbed clean. Thought we would sleep and leave early in the. I was attacked by bug while laying on bed. We left immediately at which point NO LIGHTS by which to walk out the jungle of debris and gates that need several hands to open. Since I didn't get a photo of the bug I was refused a refund?? This shack is unfit for people to be in.

The location of property is ideal but that is where it ends. The photos are not accurate. The lock to use to get in and out is difficult to use. It needs replacing. There was no head or foot board on the bed. The bed was very noisy and made it hard to sleep. The bedspread was as pictured but faded very light tan instead of dark brown. There were not curtains on all the windows in the bedroom. The alarm clock did not work. It is difficult to sit on the toilet in the bathroom because your knees are under the sink or you are sitting at an angle. The sink drips and looks like mold around the drain. It is also rusted and we didn't want to have our knees underneath it. Shower curtains were awkward. The heavy curtain was to the back of the shower. This was due to having no curtain on the window. There were 2 clear shower curtains and the one on the outside of the tub was torn at the top. The photos of the many fluffy towels was not there. There were very few towels and only one regular washcloth. There was a makeup washcloth which wasn't needed. The kitchen was dirty when we arrived. There was food in the drain and white residue in the sink. Also a large white spot on the kitchen floor. This sink also dripped the whole time we were there. Needless to say we did not use the kitchen. There are lots of power cords. We had to use the portable heaters and one kept shutting off so we couldn't use it. There were no light bulbs in the fixture just inside the front door.

Great & Not so Great
We just re read some of the reviews and it seems to be the consensus is the same. This is a great location, but the property really could use some upgrades. We like rustic places, but also need proper amenities for our stay. One washcloth and three old, mismatched towels were not what you would expect to find in a vacation rental. The bed was basic, no bed frame or bed skirt and very squeaky when you sit or roll over. The bathroom seemed to be the room that needed some deep cleaning… like a magic eraser or sos pad. We appreciate the history and character of the cottage, but the tub is not something you would want to sit in. The shower-head barely squirted out water and the very cheap plastic shower curtain would stick to your body like Saran Wrap as you tried to wash. Only shampoo was available, not conditioner and we found the hairdryer in a bottom dresser drawer on the last day of our stay. We could have used a bath mat or any type of rug in either rooms. You will have what you need in a great location and check in was easy… just know this is a very basic set up and you won’t want to shower. Other than that it was a great time.

This unit is nothing like the photos
I was excited to find a nice little place with great reviews in a good location eat downtown and the river walk. But wow was I disappointed in this trip. I left halfway through my second day and got a hotel at the St. Anthony to save my trip. This place looks nothing like the photos, it’s behind two gates, you are in the middle of a construction site and piles of junk everywhere. I got no sleep on the bed and kept getting awakened by squeaking noises (birds, rats, possums? Idk) in the middle or crack of dawn. Really disappointed also that the owner did not respond to my message via the app. This place is run by an outside rental management company and clearly doesn’t care for quality. Bathroom is really small, toilet is in-front of the sink and your forced to stare at a moldy sink while using the bathroom, very off putting.

Needs an Update
The pictures are a little inaccurate about this property. It’s location is nice but the property’s landscaping is very overgrown. There is no way to enjoy the property outside. Also the property is full of mold in the bathroom. I tried to reach out to the property manager and am still waiting on a response. It’s been over a week. My wife’s asthma flared up really bad and we had to get a hotel room in the area. This place would be really great if it had some updates. For the prices get a hotel in the area. I have never had an issue with a VRBO property before. I would just like a response from the property management.

Description accurate yet lacking
We arrived in town early and messaged host to see about getting in early. He never replied but did send multiple automatically generated emails. The gate lock as well as the trek through the jungle we had to take to get to the space was a pain. There were no yard lights and you had to dodge tree limbs and overgrown weeds, which was difficult while carrying anything. Where I come from the “garden” is just an overgrown mess. The code to the space was easy to use but a musty smell hit you in the face upon opening the door. The kitchen was fine as we don’t cook on vacation but the sitting area was miserable. There’s one small recliner so only one person can comfortably watch tv. I use the term comfortable loosely as you must be fully dressed unless you don’t mind people seeing you undressed, as there are two uncovered glass doors. Neighbors can see into windows on three sides, including the bathroom and bedroom. The bed was comfortable but if either of us moved it woke the other because it was so squeaky, I’m taking LOUD. The ac was also loud and you have to run two acs to keep the very small space cool. The tub and sink were dirty as well as around the tub. You could brush your teeth while sitting on the toilet as your knees are under the sink and you can wave to the neighbors in the pool next door, remember, no curtains. The tub is dangerous to get in and out of and the shower curtain runs completely around it. I was constantly having to rewatch when the shower curtain touched me. The shower head had no holes in the middle just around the outside so it took forever to rinse off. The walk to the river walk is 20 minutes not 10 but it is right there. There’s also a grocery store/gas station close by. I will add that you have to take racks out of the mini fridge to be able to put anything in it. This was by far the worst place we’ve stayed. I’m super annoyed that we paid more to stay here than we paid for our amazing condo on the beach. This may be fine for one person who won’t be in the room much but for anyone else, don’t do it. Just don’t.
