This stunning neoclassical building that used to house a number of banks is now a cultural hub for movies, music, plays and art.

The Santander Cultural Centre is one of Porto Alegre's leading arts and entertainment venues. This prominent cultural institution in the historic downtown area hosts art exhibitions, cinema screenings, workshops, concerts and festivals. The complex is housed inside a neoclassical and art nouveau building that once served as the home of several banks.

Stroll through the magnificent great hall to view an ever-changing programme of art exhibitions. As well as pieces by up-and-coming local artists, you may see the work of masters. The gallery has previously exhibited pieces by Picasso, Miró and Miguel Rio Branco.

Head downstairs to the old underground vaults that have been converted into a cinema. There are daily screenings of Brazilian and international movies. Be sure to look out for any premieres or film festivals that may be taking place during your time in Porto Alegre.

For music, visit the Atrium. This large performance space hosts a weekly series of concerts. Occasionally, the music programme is themed with a focus on specific areas such as different musical genres and instruments.

Get in touch with your creative side at the Making Music project that offers workshops for all levels of musicians. At the Cultural and Digital Empowerment Centre, view more exhibitions and attend seminars and debates that complement the artistic and cultural programming.

The Santander Cultural Centre is open every day except Mondays and the facilities include a café, restaurant, library and shop. Admission is free, although there are fees for the cinema and concert performances. Discounts are available for students and persons over the age of 60. For dates and times of events, visit the reception desk or check the cultural centre’s website.

The centre is located in downtown Porto Alegre and can be easily reached on foot or by bus. There is discounted parking in the nearby Andrade Neves garage when your ticket is validated at the cultural centre's reception.
