Explorethe forests of Scenic Canyon Regional Park and hike on the well-maintainedpaths to discover historical treasures. See old rock ovens and abandoned goldpits dotted throughout the lush scenery or climb to the top of the park’s peaksfor sweeping views.

Wanderalong the trails that wind through Scenic Canyon Regional Park’s 220.9 acres (89.4hectares) of land. A walk in the park will take you through sub-alpine forest,past winding rivers and across meadows, which bloom with wildflowers in thewarmer months. Birdwatchers will enjoy looking for the many native birds that livein the park. You may also see moose, deer, cougars and grizzly bears.

Amid thecanyon’s natural beauty you will discover a number of historical sites. Imaginethe area filled with hopeful pioneers when you come to the old gold pits.Several European settlers found their fortunes here during the 19th centurygold rush. Search throughthe trees and you might stumble upon rock ovens constructed by Chineselaborers. The ovens were used to bake bread and other simple food during theconstruction of the Kettle Valley Railway.

Admirethe park’s large riparian zone and cedar grove. Be sure to look out for variousunusual geological formations such as caves and rock hoodoos, alsoknown as fairy chimneys, which have been created over a period of thousands ofyears. Keen hikers will enjoy the climb to the top of Layer Cake Mountain andPinnacle Rock. Both offer spectacular views over the park. 

Scenic CanyonRegional Park is just over 20-minutes’ drive southeast from Kelowna. Parkingand basic facilities are available and there is no admission fee. The park isopen during daylight hours throughout summer, spring and fall. The car park isclosed during winter, which may make park access difficult. Nearby attractionsinclude Gallagher’s Golf Course and Mission Creek Greenway.
