Hamilton House is situated in the heart of this coastal village and a half mile's level walk to the wide pebble beach and sea. The house is situated down a private no through road at the end of which starts the footpath to the beach. The footpath itself is a delightful walk through the fields and alongside a stream before reaching the extensive pebble beach with rock pools, car park, delightful tearoom and a shop.
Hamilton House is an ideal holiday venue for couples as well as families with small children. It is a fully furnished and equipped house which is an ideal “home away from home”. It has a sitting area both on the ground floor as well as a spacious living room upstairs on the first floor enabling guests to spread out and enjoy the house at their leisure. It has been our second home for many years and we hope you will enjoy it’s charm and character as much as we have over the years!
Our housekeeper lives close by and is always available to answer any questions or offer any assistance.
The village is lovely and welcoming and the walk to the beach through the fields is the perfect way to start the day!
Activities nearby:
In terms of activities, there is so much to do in Devon (especially with young kids)! We would definitely suggest Escot ( Great day out and lots to do. Feeding of otters, bird of pray, maze, etc. Super fun for all and lovely little cafe. Only 30 minutes from Hamilton House.
For a bit of adrenaline, there a is great Lasertag venue just outside Exeter which is located within a now abandoned genuine nuclear war bunker (
A bit further afield, there is Powderham Castle ( which is a bit more sedate and has something for everyone.
Becky Falls In Dartmoor ( Lovely nature walks and small animal zoo and animal shows.
Otherwise there is also the Donkey Sanctuary (at the top of Branscombe village) lots of lovely walks, great cafe and free admission.
Many more recommendations but you only have a few days so will not be able experience everything.
Eating out:
In terms of food, lovely pub right in the centre of the village (Masons Arms) - this is literally 50 meters from the house.
The Sea Shanty at the beach also serves lovely breakfast from 9.00am every morning and is open all day with a wide selection of food (their crab sandwiches are fantastic)!
The other pub in the village (the Fountain Head) is also within walking distance (but uphill and a longer walk). The National Trust Bakery does lovely afternoon tea and is in an orchard so well worth popping in for some cakes and coffee/tea. Again, a 5-10minute walk away from the house.
The neighbouring village of Beer is also worth visiting. Lovely atmosphere and nice pub with garden overlooking the sea (The Anchor Inn).
Another more upscale option is The Pig at Combe ( Lovely food in a beautiful Elizabeth setting.
In terms of our beach, it’s absolutely lovely. We have a couple of deck chairs and some beach mats and beach umbrella. We also have some toys for kids. In general, BBQs are not allowed on the grass (as it belongs to the Sea Shanty) but we have seen many people have small BBQs in the pebble beach itself.
