Quite a nice stay at Guesthouse Fuga. The lady owner is lovely and the included breakfast was good too. Twin room with air con quite spacious and there is a desk and chair, a couple of coathangers. Just me but if you had 2 people sharing- 1 person gets a bed, the other person gets a fold out bed. I slept fine and area very quiet.
A parking spot at the front door is excellent. All rooms are upstairs so you need to be able to walk up about 15 stairs. 1 toilet and 1 washbasin upstairs but I didn't have to wait.
The reason I gave it 4 stars is the shower has to be accessed by going outside the front door into a shed. Ok in mild weather as now but would not good in the winter. Towels have to be hired for 200y as at hostels. As always if you get a noisy person, they can be heard in other rooms so I had to ask a lady to be quiet at 630am.
Easy walk to samurai street and restaurants. Take a torch if you go out at night as street lighting not very good.
We loved staying at this Japanese Inn. It is a small inn and it is clean, safe, walkable and very affordable. The shower and bathroom are not in the room, but both the bathroom and shower were always available, well stocked and very clean. Breakfast was traditional Japanese and delicious! We visited during the winter time and it was snowing, but the rooms are very warm especially since we are from south Florida. The owner makes sure you are comfortable and made us feel very welcome. We'll definitely stay here again.
I would definitely stay here again. The manager, Eiko was very relaxed and welcoming. We arrived when she was out but there was a note saying our room was ready and please go in. The walk from the station was not a bother (and we arrived when it was raining). It gave us the opportunity to learn about this amazing town. The shower room was outside the genkan but would have been fine, however we relaxed in the public bathhouse just around the corner. Breakfast was truly amazing, prepared by Eiko in her restaurant at the front of the guesthouse. Her free bikes were in great condition and excellent for seeing the town and adjacent area. Kakunodate was a surprise for us, we came to ride the Akita Nairiku train ride and also discovered the amazing samurai houses and the plantations of cherry trees. Really recommend a visit to the Ishigura samurai house. 12th generation resident Mr Ishigura gave a really interesting tour in English - 400 yen.

Poor choice
Quite a distance from station (good 15-20 minute walk, no bus, otherwise taxi). Located on right hand side of road between Ando House and Uchikawa bridge in south west of town (nowhere near a castle (?) as stated in details!). Bad soundproofing from next room (thin plywood walls) also some noise from owner's dogs; shower in garage, might be a cold experience in winter. Our room was bright and pleasant but sparsely furnished. No table or communal seating area. We have been in Japan for 2 months staying at all types of accommodation; this was the only Japanese guesthouse that charges to rent a towel (none provided) ! One would expect a free towel for a room with shared facilities at £62 per night! Owner requested our arrival time, which we gave to the minute, but place was deserted on arrival. Very unusually for Japan no passport or ID was later requested. In view of the distance, an offer to pick up guests from station would be a bonus. Without this facility and for the above reasons this accommodation is not a good choice. Good restaurant and onsen short walk away, also tunnel of floodlit cherry trees along the river. Very pleasant small town well worth a visit, but other accommodation is advised.
My stay overall was good. I would say that the listing of the property should be updated to accurately reflected the facilities. The listing stated that there was a shared bathroom. This is not accurate. There was a shared toilet but no shower or bath facilities. The only place to have a shower or bath was down the road at a public facility.

The beds were okay, a bit lumpy but I did sleep well on them. Slightly too short for my size but I'm a tall westerner at 194 cm (6'4½"). The room's heater though was just too loud. The breakfast is tasty.
I can't say anything about the shower room because I used the nearby onsen.
Staying with the host family but everyone party gets a separate bedroom
There are simple amenities and towels for rent.
Cozy place that feels like home.
Only drawback is to need to walk <1 min to the showering place but they have good warm keeping facilities during winter.
