The imposing obelisk at the core of September Seven Square is one of Belo Horizonte’s most iconic sights. Numerous skyscrapers overlook the plaza, which stands on a busy spot in the city’s downtown district. Meet friends at this popular gathering point, before exploring the area’s main attractions.
Snap photographs of the famous granite obelisk, known affectionately by locals as the Lollipop in reference to its distinctive shape. The monument, which is 23 feet (7 meters) tall, was donated to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Brazilian Day of Independence. The square takes its name from the date of the nation’s independence in 1822.
Approach the obelisk for a closer look and inspect its four inscriptions that reference the fight for freedom. Around the monument is a red circle that marks the street. Admire the architecture of the intriguing structures surrounding the square, such as the wonderful art deco Cine Theatro Brasil building from the 1930s. Other highlights include the Banco da Lavoura structure and the Banco Mineiro da Produção edifice.
Relax with a snack or hot drink at one of the cafés with a view of the square. Try the traditional local cheese bread and get a typical small dark coffee. Watch people go by in this lively hub at the intersection of busy streets. Note that the plaza was previously known as October Twelve Square, in reference to the supposed date Columbus first arrived in the Americas in 1492.
September Seven Square is right in the center of Belo Horizonte. Walk west from the Central Station for about 10 minutes to get here or ride a bus to one of the nearby stops. Make sure to see some of the other sights in the area, such as the São José Church, the Santa Tereza Viaduct and the Teatro Francisco Nunes.
