Capture photos of the most remarkable part of the Jandía Beach zone as you trawl past water pools and mountains of sand.

Find picturesque lagoons and sprawling desert-like sand dunes at Sotavento de Jandía Beach. The wind can be strong, making it ideal for various types of surfing and sunbathing with a refreshing breeze. Find your own space on the long, wide beach to sit with a picnic and enjoy views of the ocean.

Sotavento Beach covers a large part of Pajara on the southern part of the island. Visit the Playa Barca stretch of sand to participate in kite surfing. Enjoy being dragged around by a kite for hours in this windy area. Visit Risco el Paso, another beach about 1 mile (1.6 kilometres) south. Join the many windsurfers on the waves at this scenic bay.

Between the two beaches is the stunning area of lagoons made from ocean tides. Stroll through the mountains of sand and admire the pools of water. Arrive just before high tide to catch the lagoons filling with water. Take a walk through the waist-deep puddles and look at the fish swimming around your feet. Let your kids play in the water and enjoy their bemused faces as the tide changes and the lagoons fill.

Jog along the beach at sunset to appreciate the scenic view of the ocean with the changing hues of the sky.

This region on the southern part of the island is particularly popular with German tourists and there are also many nudists. Risco el Paso and Playa Barca have parking facilities and restaurants. The beaches are free to enter.

Sotavento de Jandía Beach lies in the municipality of Pajara on the southern part of Fuerteventura. This section of the long stretch of sand is located in the resort town of Jandía. It is a 50-mile (80-kilometre) journey south from Fuerteventura Airport. Travel here by taxi or shuttle bus.
