Browse the contemporary sculptures and works on paper in this modern gallery and relax with a meal on a terrace overlooking a lake.

Sprengel Museum is a gallery showcasing some of the most acclaimed and innovative works of art from the 20th and 21st centuries. The focus on mostly modern works is reflected in the architecture, which is light and airy and has whitewashed, avant-garde walls. Wander through this museum for an insight into one of Germany’s most significant modern art collections.

Inspect some of the gallery’s triumphs of art from the past century. Among the biggest names are Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso and Max Beckmann. Take a guided tour to learn from a docent about these masters of their domain and the meaning and context behind their works.

Visit the various temporary exhibits that inhabit the museum for a few months before moving elsewhere. Other displays are permanent, such as the Painting and Sculpture section that contains pieces by famous groups and artists. See the gallery’s intriguing Works on Paper collection, including watercolors, drawings and collages among the diverse styles.

Browse the range of tomes and leaflets about photography, architecture, design and other artistic themes in the site’s bookshop. Take a break with snacks and refreshments at the bell’ARTE Restaurant that overlooks the Maschsee lake. Enjoy its charming terrace on summer nights.

The museum takes its name from a collector who donated his works to the city of Hannover in 1969. The museum opened a decade later, blending his collection with other pieces belonging to the city and the state of Lower Saxony.

Visit the museum from morning until early evening Tuesday through Sunday. Enter for free on Fridays and pay a fee on other days. Children get in for free and students and groups have discounts.

The Sprengel Museum is just south of historic central Hannover at the northeastern corner of the vast Maschsee lake. Reach the museum via the Hannover Schlägerstraße stop on the U-Bahn. Make sure to see nearby attractions, including the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall), the Lower Saxony State Museum, the Maschpark and the large Maschsee lake.
