Taichung
Taichung featuring a city
With cosy restaurants, traditional night markets and tranquil tai chi in the park, this destination will make you forget that you’re in Taiwan’s third-largest city.

See astounding contemporary architecture give way to Taiwan’s majestic mountain ranges in Taichung. This fascinating city is known for its focus on small business. A trip to its downtown district reveals intimate restaurants, family-owned businesses and traditional markets. Find an exciting range of museums, gardens and cultural attractions within a short stroll from the city’s central WuQuan Parkway, also known as the Art Museum Parkway.

Receive a perfect introduction to the city in the Parkway, Taichung’s corridor of urban parkland. Arrive early to join the locals for tai chi and grab breakfast from a nearby street vendor. Try youtiao, a fried breadstick wrapped in a delicate green onion pancake.

The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts is located at the Parkway’s southern end. See work by some of Taiwan’s most significant artists, as well as cultural artifacts and interactive exhibits for children. Next door at the Da Dun Cultural Centre, check for exhibitions, events and children’s story-telling sessions, conducted in English.

Head north to visit the National Museum of Natural Science. This museum has plenty of exciting hands-on experiments. Behind the museum lies the Botanical Garden of Taichung. Wander through the charming gardens to see native flora, a lotus pond, tropical rainforest exhibits and fascinating aquariums.

Nearby, find the enormous golden Buddha at Paochueh Temple. This temple complex also has a Shinto shrine and tranquil surrounding gardens.

Travel northwest from the city centre to the Kaomei Wetlands. Wander along the boardwalks, spot different bird species and watch a beautiful sunset over the water. Taichung’s famous oceanfront fishing market is a 5-minute drive away.

In the evening, visit Taichung’s night markets, such as Feng Chia Night Market. Browse the stalls of souvenirs and try fresh regional dishes. Grab a cup of original Taichung bubble tea, a tea drink mixed with tapioca pearls and milk or fruit.

Reach Taichung by plane or high-speed rail. Explore Taichung’s compact downtown area on foot or catch taxis and local buses. Taichung’s climate is mild year-round, making it a great destination for outdoor exploring.

4/5 - Good

Verified traveller

A vibrant city with options for all tastes, you just need to explore a bit. The surprise was all the artwork on display throughout the city. Public transport needs to be improved.

3/5 - Okay

Verified traveller

Too many motorbikes and shops. No considerations for pedestrians and horrible pollution. Although variety of cheap and yummy foods.

4/5 - Good

The traffic near to the local train station is always congested.
