Sunbathe, pursue water sports and see where ancient Romans used to live when you visit this seaside destination on the west coast of Italy.

Talamone is an old fortified fishing village by the Tyrrhenian Sea in an area known as Tuscany's Etruscan Riviera. The village is surrounded by medieval walls and sits amid a picturesque landscape, the beauty of which was captured by the 2008 James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace. Windsurf across the bay, go wildlife spotting in a natural park and survey historical sites.

Sitting at the top of the village is the 13th-century Aldobrandeschi Fortress. Stand by its walls and enjoy the spectacular views out to sea. Evidence of the presence of Etruscans and Romans in Talamone can be seen in the ruins situated close to the castle. The relics you can see include the remains of a Roman villa.

Stroll through the narrow streets of the village, past old stone houses and down to the beaches that make up the Bay of Talamone. Try water sports such as sailing, kitesurfing and windsurfing.

While sand and sea are the big attractions here, take some time out to learn about the local environment with a visit to the Aquarium of the Orbetello Lagoon. Browse exhibits that showcase the wetland area’s flora and fauna, as well as the ecosystems between the sea and the lagoon.

On the outskirts of the village is the Natural Park of the Maremma, a protected area of green hills, pine woods, secluded bays and beaches. Hike along trails that lead through forests, along the coastline and to heritage watchtowers. The park also shelters numerous wildlife species. Among the animals you might see here are roe deer, wild boars, foxes, badgers and ospreys.

Pisa is 116 miles (186 kilometers) north of the village, while the Italian capital is 105 miles (169 kilometers) southeast.
