Towering over the ocean, the majestic El Arco rock formation represents a gateway to the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean beyond. The rock’s distinct arch-like shape has formed over time with the rough winds and stormy ocean eroding the rock and slowly carving it into the shape it is today. Known as Land’s End, this part of the Baja Peninsula is one of Cabo San Lucas’ top attractions.
Don’t forget to bring your camera—one of the best photo opportunities comes when you approach the arch from the water. Look out for the resident sea lions hanging out on the rocks, or take a trip in a glass-bottomed boat to spot the brightly coloured local tropical fish.
The best time to visit El Arco is in the afternoon and evening, when you can watch the rocks change colour as the sun goes down. If you have the time, you can combine a visit to El Arco with a trip to the secluded Playa del Amor, or “Lover’s Beach”. Kick back and relax on the beach or go swimming and snorkelling with the abundant marine life. The area was popular with pirates during the 16th Century, and they used to hide behind the rocks waiting to ambush the incoming Spanish ships laden with gold.
If you visit El Arco between December and March keep your eye out for whales as they perform their annual migration from the freezing Arctic to the warm Baja Peninsula. The shallow, sheltered waters mean many females choose this area to give birth and raise their young.
You can reach El Arco via water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Alternatively you can hire a kayak and paddle to Land’s End at your own speed. It’s a good idea to bring your own supplies to El Arco, as the natural, secluded area has limited facilities. Bear in mind that the strong currents of the Pacific Ocean make the water on that side of Land’s End unsuitable for swimming.
