If you have any interest in photography or the works of fine photographers, you must visit Fotografiska, Stockholm’s photography museum. Here you can take classes or view the images created by internationally renowned contemporary photographers. Visit the museum as well to enjoy panoramic views of Stockholm from the restaurant on the museum’s top floor.
Fotografiska hosts four large exhibitions annually as well as 20 smaller collections. Annie Liebovitz, the influential portrait photographer from the U.S., was featured as one of the opening exhibits, presenting A Photographer’s Life. One hundred years of Olympic images were presented in ePic Moments. Swedish photographers Julia Hetta and Helena Blomqvist have also been featured. Be inspired by these great photographic artists and then apply to your own photography interests. Take a class in beginners’ photography weekend instruction is offered in English. Swedish classes are also available in subjects ranging from visual communication to digital imagery. Renowned artists visit frequently and lecture on relevant photography topics.
Even if you don’t take a photography class or explore the museum, visit the top-floor restaurant for the photogenic views of the city. Look out over the islands of Djurgården and Skeppsholmen and Saltsjön Bay. The food is as good as the view. Vegetarian dishes are featured. There is also al fresco dining at the museum’s entrance in the summer. Enjoy music, either live or with an energetic DJ, from Thursday through Saturday.
Fotografiska is just a 10-minute drive from the centre of Stockholm. The bus and metro stop at Slussen is a short walk from the museum’s location on Stadsgårdshamnen. On a pleasant day, make the half-hour walk from King’s Garden along the Gamla Stan waterfront to see a few sights in the Old Town on your way to the museum.
