The special location on the Katinger Watt, here information from NABU:
The bird sanctuary Katinger Watt with its meadows and forests has long captivated the beauty and vastness of the North Sea. The former mudflats and salt marshes of the Eider estuary were dammed from 1967 to 1973 for flood protection reasons and have since developed under the protective hand of NABU into a unique refuge for plants and animals.
Meadow birds such as the avocet and the lapwing feel just as comfortable here as greylag geese and sea eagles with their young. Extensive orchid meadows find their place under nature-friendly cattle grazing as well as new salt meadows in front of the dams.
And people are also welcome in this paradise to experience and enjoy nature.
In the NABU Nature Center Katinger Watt you can expect a small natural garden oasis with an exhibition and diverse nature experiences. Our team will accompany you on exciting excursions through the area and the adjacent Wadden Sea National Park. This team looks after, maintains and manages the four protected areas of the Eider Estuary in cooperation with the land owner, the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
