Learn about this sleepy town’s naval history after walking through its stunning gardens and dozing on the sandy beach.

Beaches are the main draw to the small fishing village of Le Mourillon just outside Toulon on France’s south coast. Le Mourillon's port has a fascinating history entwined with the French Navy and the region’s trade for many centuries. After an afternoon on the beach, take a look around the charming village center for its cafés, shops and museums.

The area has a Mediterranean climate, with very hot summers and mild winters. You can swim in the sea from late March to early October. Expect to see countless families from nearby Toulon at the beach in the summer.

The city’s military history is evident from the various old structures around the port area. Take a look at the Military Port of Toulon, which is France’s main Navy base. Amble along the small fishing port to watch people hoping for their catch of the day. Get a closer look at the Fort Saint Louis, which dates back to the 1500s.

Beside the fort is the Museum of Asian Art, which holds fascinating collections of creative works from the Far East, India, Tibet and South-East Asia. Browse the sculptures, Buddha paintings, antique Chinese vases and Japanese cast iron kettles. The gallery is a section of the Museum of Art, which is based in Toulon.

Le Mourillon’s pristine beaches attract vacationers from nearby Toulon as well as visitors from across the globe. Stroll along 17 acres (7 hectares) of sand and enjoy a picnic with your family. Among the attractions at the beach are a playground, mini-golf and beach volley.

Drop in at the Acclimation Garden to get picturesque views of the Mediterranean Sea in the background. Peruse the array of colorful flowers and relax on the grass.

The village is just 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) to the east of Toulon, a journey that should take 10 minutes by car. The Toulon-Hyeres Airport serves international destinations, and is 15 miles (24 kilometers) east of Le Mourillon.

Enjoy a relaxing time on the beach and walk around the port in the quaint village of Le Mourillon.
