A beach is not always just a beach, particularly when its entrance is unusual. Approach this beach with its dramatic portal.

Tunnel Park is just to the west of Holland, Michigan on the shores of Lake Michigan and has features that are unique. Pass through a tunnel that goes under a sand dune and arrive at a powder sand beach after walking down a few stairs. Alternatively, follow a staircase that goes over the dune and enjoy the view at the top on an observation deck. Children may prefer to find their way over the dune itself to get to the other side.

The tunnel’s picturesque setting makes it a popular venue for wedding pictures, but it’s also a favorite venue for taking amazing sunset photos over Lake Michigan. Try to capture that romantic period when the sun sinks into the water with the rounded sides of the tunnel serving as the frame for pictures.

The beach is smaller than the one in the state park, but it’s often less crowded. Although there aren’t any lifeguards, the water by the beach is shallow. Play a game of beach volleyball at one of four courts. A children’s play area will keep your youngsters entertained while you relax on the sand. Restrooms and change areas are provided.

This 22-acre (9-hectare) county park is not as large as the state park on its southern boundary, but it has the requirements to provide an outstanding, fun-filled family outing. Sit under one of many shade trees on a hot day and enjoy a picnic at a number of tables and grill areas. Although concession stands aren’t available, vending machines are provided during the tourist season.

Bring your hiking boots as the park has trails, while many facilities are wheelchair accessible. Note that dogs are not allowed at the beach May 1 through September 30.

Find Tunnel Park on Lakeshore Drive, just west of Holland and north of Holland State Park. A parking fee is required during the busier time of the year.
