Take a guided tour of this impressive United States Coast Guard vessel, celebrated for its significant World War II history.

USCGC (United States Coast Guard Cutter) Taney is a warship famous for surviving the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Tour the decommissioned treasury-class cutter to see many fascinating areas, including the bridge, the deck, the wardroom and the fantail. The warship is part of a collection of restored military vessels in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, called Historic Ships in Baltimore.

Learn the captivating history of USCGC Taney, now serving as a memorial and museum. After being commissioned in 1936, the vessel carried out supply operations from the Hawaiian Islands and through the central Pacific Ocean. While moored in Honolulu Harbor, the Taney was able to man anti-aircraft guns against Japanese planes during the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, the moment the U.S. entered World War II.

Tours of USCGC Taney include visits to the warship’s lower deck and berthing areas. The wardroom used by the ship’s officers is another interesting area. Walk on the main deck to see USCGC Taney’s weapons, including the 5-inch/38-caliber gun, the largest weapon onboard. The deck also features outstanding views of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and other nearby historic vessels.

After exploring USCGC Taney, walk to Pier 1 to see the collection’s US Sloop-of-War Constellation, a historic warship constructed in the mid-19th century. The Inner Harbor also features USS Torsk, a tench-class submarine. The submarine, moored at Pier 3, was responsible for sinking two of the last Japanese warships before World War II ended. Look for a screw-pile lighthouse and a lightship, called Lightship Chesapeake, in the area as well.

Baltimore’s Inner Harbor hosts many educational events year-round, such as lantern light tours of USS Constellation and overnight adventure programs. Purchase tickets to tour USCGC or pay slightly more to explore all vessels in the Historic Ships in Baltimore collection. Buy tickets from the Ship’s Store at Pier 1 or the ticket booth at Pier 5. USCGC Taney at Pier 5 is open Friday and Saturday during January and February and daily the rest of the year.

Bring a camera to photograph USCGC Taney and more historic ships in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.
