Shimmering in the Osaka sunshine, this 173-metre (567-foot) tall skyscraper is an engineering marvel. Located in one of Osaka’s most popular districts, the Umeda Sky Building is the jewel in the Shin Umeda City complex. It’s surrounded by traditional-style restaurants and landscaped city streets. At the top of the building, the Floating Garden Observatory is a great place to look over Osaka.
Since 1993, the Umeda Sky Building has punctuated the skyline of the Shin Umeda district. The structure features two 40-storey towers connected by a bridge. Cross the bridge to discover the building’s main attraction, a floating garden.
Ride the elevator to the 40th floor to visit the garden. Look through its windows to see across the Osaka skyline to Awaji Island in the distance. If you’re feeling brave, emerge into the fresh air on the roof of the Umeda Sky Building to take what will surely be one of the best photos of your trip. The air is crisp and fresh up here, so bring a jacket and avoid it on windy days.
Venture beneath the building to find the enchanting market restaurants in the basement. Takimi Koji is an underground street dedicated to gourmet food and one of the best places to eat in the area. The nostalgic dining experience recreates the charisma of mid-20th century Osaka and is a fascinating cultural experience.
After you eat, head out onto the streets to explore the sights of Shin Umeda City. Follow walking trails to discover cascading water features and manicured gardens.
The Umeda Sky Building’s observation deck is open daily. An admission fee applies. To reach the building catch the subway to Umeda station and follow the signs to Shin Umeda City.
