The ancient Shardana (or more correctly Sherdana, and also Sher-den) warriors were a population of the Coalition of Sea Peoples mentioned in Egyptian sources from the 2nd millennium B.C. and presumably identifiable with the ancient Sardinians. Egyptian documents dating back to the Amarnian period that first mention this population are written in hieroglyphics that phonetically indicate only the consonants SRDN; thus, there is no certainty as to the correct pronunciation of these ideograms, although the most accredited is Serdèn. The currently most probable hypothesis is that the ancient Sherdana came from the eastern Mediterranean, settled in Sardinia and identified themselves as the Nuragic peoples who later attempted the conquest of Egypt. From ancient Mesopotamia to Egypt, the cultivation of vines and the practice of winemaking then spread throughout the central Mediterranean and from there to Europe thanks to the Roman Empire.
