Usuki Stone Buddhas

Clusters of colorful Buddha statues dating back centuries appear to leap from the volcanic walls running down the side of a mountain.

The Usuki Stone Buddhas is a set of extraordinary spiritual statues cut into exposed cliff faces. The collection comprises four separate groups of about 60 sculptures that are thought to have been carved between the 8th and 14th centuries. Get a closer look at the intricate and well-formed details of these rocky homages to Buddha.

Arrive in the site and stroll along the various nature paths that lead through scenic bamboo groves and thickets of trees. You’ll reach the Hoki First Cluster, which has more than 20 sculptures. Consider the differences between the Buddhas in sitting positions and those standing. The group includes Bodhisattvas and 10 so-called Heavenly Kings, as well as a Jizo and a Yakushi.

At the Hoki Second Cluster admire the attention to detail in this mountainside gallery, which focuses on the Amita form of Buddha. The nearby Sannousan Cluster is known for its enormous Buddha neighbored by a pair of attendants.

Explore the Furuzono Cluster for the sculpture of Dainichi Nyorai, among the highlights in the complex. Its head has been reattached, having lain on the floor for centuries.

Wander through the scenic gardens and sit next to the lotus pond of the neighboring Mangetsu Temple. It has its own collection of fascinating statues.

The identity of the artists behind the mountain sculptures remains a mystery. The rock face here is a blend of lava and tuff, making it fairly soft and compliant. Notice how roofs have been built in places to protect these statues from weather erosion. The Buddhas have been designated among Japan’s National Treasures.

Find the Usuki Stone Buddhas in the southwestern limits of Usuki in the Ōita Prefecture. Drive southwest from the city center along the Usuki River for 3 miles (5 kilometers) to get here in 10 to 15 minutes. See other nearby sights such as the Kumano Shrine, the Mitama Shrine and the Himedake Mountain.
