Summertime sees locals and visitors alike flocking to Utah Lake State Park to enjoy fishing, kayaking and hillwalking. As well as being the largest freshwater lake in the state of Utah, it’s also one of the biggest in the west of American, which is unusual given that the surrounding land is largely arid.
The lake was first discovered by Europeans in 1776, when a group of Spanish colonists happened upon it. One member of the group, Bernardo Y. Pacheco, reported that “this place is the most pleasant, beautiful, and fertile in New Spain”. By the start of the following century, Utah Lake had taken hold as its name. The 1930s saw the development of a marina on the lake, increasing its accessibility for boating, as well as its popularity. It was declared a State Park in 1970.
Relax and enjoy the calm waters, perfect for sailing or water skiing. Provo River spills over into the lake in the park, and is an excellent option for canoeing and kayaking. Later in the year, the frozen lake becomes the perfect ice fishing spot for catfish and bass.
A good place to begin your visit is at the visitor centre in the nearby town of Provo. The friendly staff will be happy to provide you with maps and local information on the best mountain routes and places to photograph animals in the area. This town is also a great option for picking up food or anything else you might need before heading for the lake. Provo is a charming place in its own right, with an array of restaurants, churches and pretty shops to choose from.
There is a modern campsite at Utah Lake, with plenty of space and all the facilities you'll need. Make sure to book your camper van or tent space on the Utah State Parks' website before you travel.
The park is situated 77 kilometres to the south of Salt Lake City, near the city of Provo. Utah Lake State Park is an excellent option for a day trip during the summer, and you can also include a visit to the Timpanogos Cave National Monument, located to the north.
