Excellent communication but some shortcomings
The property is in a residential area fairly close to amenities, however it is a steep downhill + back uphill walk. The suite was a basement room with no windows. The owner was not home when I arrived, no lights left on and a steep set of cement steps to navigate. There was a distinctly unsavory smell in my room when I entered. There was another bedroom that was occupied, and only one bathroom that this occupant said we were sharing. She had a dog that started barking when she stepped out for 1/2 hour, the owner had 2 dogs that were loose and standing at the inside basement steps barking. Not a good first impression. The smell in the room was suffocating. I had booked for 2 nights, but left very early in the am after an uncomfortable 1st night. The listing refers to unusual animals that may cause an allergic reaction, this being a very large snake enclosed in an adjacent room. On the positive side, Steve was excellent with communication before I arrived and after I left abruptly. He was willing to do whatever he could to make things right. He told me he had the carpet shampooed immediately in the room I stayed in and offered me some incentives if I returned. Could have been a comedy of errors, but my biggest concerns were the lack of outside lighting, the snake, the carpeted room that had housed many pets throughout the booking season, 1 bathroom for 2 suites and the lack of a window in the basement room.
