You might describe Volkswagen Autostadt Complex as a working theme park. Volkswagen uses this site for delivery of its German-bound cars and has created an entertainment complex that millions of people visit annually. Step into this amazing world of cars with its own train station, lakes, parks, events center and restaurants.
The site opened in 2000 to showcase Volkswagen’s renowned auto technology and reliability and provide a vision of its future. If you love cars, you can easily spend the day learning about your favorite brands. Even if you aren’t a car enthusiast, explore other attractions in the 69-acre (28-hectare) complex.
Start your tour at the GroupForum, which has art, a cinema, design and sustainability exhibits and a mobility play area. Separate large pavilions are dedicated to specific brands. Walk between pavilions for Volkswagen, Porsche, Audi, Seat and Skoda. See the most modern cars and vintage models including Lamborghinis, Bugattis and Bentleys.
Rising from the park are two glass car towers, each holding up to 400 new cars waiting for customer delivery. Tour this high tech delivery system with a stop at the observation platform at 157 feet (48 meters). From here, look over Volkswagen’s manufacturing plant and large parts of Wolfsburg. For additional fees, you may be able to take a factory tour with a train ride through the building or arrange an off-road test drive.
Have a meal at one of the 10 varied restaurants on site. Autostadt restaurants have partnered with local suppliers for fresh produce, meats and cheese. Go a step farther, taking lessons with one of the chefs at the on-site cooking school.
The site is open from mid-morning to early evening every day except Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Book tickets online and check for special savings opportunities. Consider a combination ticket for Volkswagen Autostadt Complex and phaeno, a science center with 350 exciting science displays, most of them interactive. Drive to the Autostadt and use the on-site parking or arrive via the ICE high-speed train from Hannover and cross the canal from phaeno, just 90 steps from the station.
