Enter the world of an elusive man who created some of the most impressive and pleasing art in the state of Mississippi.

Visit the Walter Anderson Museum of Art to see a collection of the inspiring art created by Walter Inglis Anderson. Watercolors, drawings, oils, murals and other arts display colors, contrast, flow and subjects that draw in viewers.

Anderson is described as artist, naturalist and mystic. He was able to blend his spiritual pursuits and ecological interests to create impressive art. The museum holds over 1,000 pieces, with some permanent displays and additional special exhibitions of themed works by Anderson and other regional artists.

Besides being an artist, Anderson was also a writer. As you view his art, read his own words describing his mood, thoughts or actions when he was creating a specific piece. Stop in the gift shop to purchase a copy of The Horn Island Logs of Walter Inglis Anderson, filled with his illustrations and reflections from 20 years of visits to this nearby undeveloped barrier island.

Step into the Little Room, the place where Anderson created the sanctuary of nature in an enclosed space. He painted the walls from floor to ceiling with colorful murals, depicting butterflies, birds, frogs, rabbits and his beloved black cat, all representing the life cycle of a single day. Abstract green foliage and flowers fill the background. A large floral pattern covers the ceiling. Check for upcoming special events scheduled in this intimate space.

Plan your visit for early November to coincide with the annual Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival. From its origin in 1978 with 56 booths, it has grown to be one of the largest events of its type along the Gulf Coast. Peter was Walter’s older brother and a renowned master potter, the founder of Shearwater Pottery. Today more than 400 artists and crafters, food vendors, entertainers and educators make this a lively weekend. Pre-parties and other activities leading up to the festival start in August.

Find the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in the center of Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The museum is open daily, with Sunday hours in the afternoon only. Purchase tickets online or at the door, requesting discounts for seniors, students and children.
