Loomis Lair is where the Loomis Homestead once stood, before it was burned by a local vigilante Mob in 1866. Waterville was also known as the Hop Capital of the Country from the mid 1800's to the mid 1900's and is the birth place of George Eastman, who founded the Eastman Kodak Company.
Recreational activities abound with Canoeing and Fishing in the near-by Sangerfield River in Nine Mile Swamp, Hiking, X-country Skiing, Snowmobiling and Horseback Riding are close-by at the Charles E. Baker State Forest, a continuous unit of State Land that encompasses 9,414 acres. It is one of the largest solid blocks of NYS public lands outside the Catskills and the Adirondack forest preserves. The Beaver Creek State Forest and the Brookfield Rail Road State Forest also provide good outdoor recreational opportunities.
