This riverside playground offers culture, recreation and entertainment in a picturesque setting.

Indianapolis is rightly proud of White River State Park, the only urban state park in Indiana, offering a wide variety of attractions and entertainment just a stone’s throw from the city centre. Take a walk along the banks of the White River to discover museums, art galleries, sports facilities, a world-class zoo and the largest IMAX cinema in the state.

Indiana State Museum offers a stimulating overview of local history, from ancient fossils to modern inventions. Over 500,000 items form the museum’s permanent collection, the majority of which have a direct link with Indiana. Nearby, the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art tells the story of the state’s indigenous people through its collection of Native American art, jewellery, saddle blankets, clothing and other fascinating cultural artifacts.

A different kind of culture can be experienced at Victory Field, home of the Indianapolis Indians baseball team, one of the oldest teams in the minor league, with an illustrious history stretching back to 1902. The new stadium, which opened in 1996, is considered to be one of the finest facilities of its kind in America.

Indianapolis Zoo is also proud of its heritage, along with its pioneering work in conservation and research. As well as being home to over 1,500 animals from a wide variety of different climates and terrains, the zoo also boasts a well-stocked aquarium, a state-of-the-art dolphin pavilion and beautiful botanical gardens.

The park has a year-round programme of events and activities for all tastes. During the summer months there are outdoor concerts and performances of Shakespeare, while the Indianapolis Irish Festival in September is a great excuse for everyone to let their hair down and enjoy the craic. The walking trails and picnic areas are popular for family days out, especially at weekends when the weather is fine.

White River State Park is open day and night and there is no admission charge. Full details of events are published on the official website, so check before you visit to see what’s on while you're there.
