San Francisco

A city brimming with iconic imagery and sounds, with steep hills, the sound of streetcars rattling up and down them and the infamous Alcatraz island prison.

This has to be one of the jewels California’s crown, and a magnificent destination for any visitor to enjoy, with its great food and wine, plenty for all of the family to do, and an atmosphere that can only be described as unique.

A city that is fundamentally associated with the sixties and the counter-cultural and hippie attitude that was prevalent at that time, San Francisco still has a bohemian feel about it to this day. Elsewhere, the city is now one of the world’s major centres for technology companies, with the city home to many technology start-ups.

San Francisco has a wealth of attractions. Hitch a ride on a cable car to Fisherman’s Wharf, or stroll over the spectacular and iconic Golden Gate Bridge, there are many unique sights to see in San Francisco. The Fisherman’s Wharf area retains some of San Francisco’s fishing heritage, while the likes of Union Square offer world-class shopping.

Take in the bohemian atmosphere of Haight-Ashbury. Shop the big names in fashion in Union Square stroll along the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

Elsewhere in the city, culture is divers. Little Italy, Japan Town and Chinatown all offer authentic cuisine and culture usually associated with parts of Europe and East Asia. The Embarcadero area is particularly popular; here you’ll find eateries that have great views over the bay, or you can pick up some fresh produce at the farmers’ market.

Golden Gate Park is another particularly memorable feature of this city which attracts flocks of visitors every year, perfect for a day out with family. If you love nature, Muir Woods has the most staggering and awe-inspiring redwood trees. After a visit to the woods, board a ferry and head out to the seaside village of Sausalito, a charming location with a Mediterranean feel, located near the bay. Or catch a ferry out to Alcatraz Island for a tour of the world’s most notorious prison.

This only scratches the surface of the fun to be had in San Francisco. This city is full of life and contrasts. Weather in San Francisco is changeable and it always pays to pack clothing suitable for cooler days. Having said that, when the sun shines, the temperatures in the city can be as glorious as anywhere in California.
