Nagoya

Japan’s fourth-largest city is home to a fascinating history, an up-to-date shopping scene and gorgeous springtime cherry blossoms.

With nearly 3 million inhabitants, Nagoya is the fourth-largest metropolis in Japan. Still, this vibrant modern city has retained its strong historical flavour and its distinctive local charms. Visit Nagoya for its its shopping opportunities, its lovely springtime scenery and its well-maintained cultural attractions.

If you come to Nagoya by high-speed train, you will arrive at the city’s main railroad station. Nagoya Station is in fact the world’s largest railroad complex. Head upstairs to the JR Central Towers, where some of Nagoya’s finest shopping is to be done. You will also find two viewing decks, luxury hotels, bars and day spa facilities.

Take the train to the city’s outskirts to learn about another favourite mode of transport in Japan, the automobile. The Toyota Automobile Museum is home to a variety of luxury cars from Europe and the United States, along with some classic Japanese models. Auto enthusiasts will also enjoy the educational Toyota Techno Museum in town.

Nagoya’s historical side is on show at the Nagoya Castle, at the city’s historical centre. This castle was damaged during World War II but has been carefully restored since then, with renovations ongoing. Check out the moats and the turreted walls in the surrounding park as well.

During springtime, Nagoya bursts with colour as the cherry blossoms bloom. Take part in the Japanese tradition of hanami, a pastime that brings crowds together in parks to enjoy the trees’ beautiful display. Head to Helwa Park to experience one of the most well-known hanami spots in town.

Just 15 minutes on the train will bring you to one of Japan’s most sacred sites. Pay your respects at the Atsuta Shrine, and linger a while to enjoy the serenity of this lovely wooded area.

Nagoya’s well-known cuisine is certainly worth a taste test. The city’s signature dish is hitsumabushi, a meal of grilled eel served with broth and rice in a wooden bowl.

Reach Nagoya by air or by high-speed train. The train journey takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes from Tokyo or 35 minutes from Kyoto.
