Osaka Travel Guide Video

Tradition and contemporary culture are seen in the food, fashion, anime and temples of the third-largest city in Japan.

One of Japan’s most popular destinations for tourists, Osaka is a great springboard to see nearby Kobe, Sakai, Kyoto and Nara. But Osaka is an attraction in its own right, particularly for its central business district, known for its excellent shopping, and the glamorous neighbourhood of Namba in the south.

Start your exploration of Osaka at Kita in the north, where you’ll find the National Museum of Art descending three levels beneath the ground. See important works from the post-World War II movements within Japan, alongside international exhibitions. Venture next door to see the Osaka Science Museum, where younger audiences will love the live science shows. Climb the Umeda Sky Building for panoramic views across the city from the observatory deck.

Close to the centre of the city you’ll find plenty of activities the whole family can enjoy. Visit the Tennoji Zoo or surround yourself with colourful blooms at Tennoji Park. You’ll love exploring the Shitennoji Temple, which dates back to the sixth century. Climb to the peak of Tsūtenkaku Tower, a symbol of Osaka’s success, offering more great views across the city.

The jewel in Osaka’s waterfront precinct is the Osaka Aquarium, one of the largest of its kind in the world. Watch nearly 30,000 creatures swim alongside an enormous whale shark. From the aquarium you’re just a 10-minute ferry ride from Universal Studios Japan® where you can ride roller coasters and meet movie personalities.

Relax as you walk around the picturesque Osaka Castle, first built in 1585. Visit Nakanoshima Park to admire the many colours of the rose garden.

If you’re looking for some retail therapy, make a beeline for Minami, where you’ll find luxury fashion boutiques and historic stores side-by-side. Stop by the Nanba Grand Kagetsu after sunset for a laugh at the comedy theatre. As you emerge onto the neon-lit streets of Nanba you’ll be ready to reflect on a day well spent.

Very busy, lots of things to do, amazing street food. However, there are many rude Chinese tourists. Streets are filthy. Hotels are dirty and worn down.

We stayed right near Dotonbori. It's lively 24 hours, 7 days a week. Sometimes we would be out at 1am and many people were still out and restaurants still serving food. Ichiran Ramen was a definite 'go-to' at any time of the day. Plenty to do.

Lots of different things to see and do and eat and a must visit. The transport system in Japan is so easy and convenient if you need a change in scenery you can just pop on a train or bullet train.
