You can't go to Miami without hitting South Beach, world-famous for celebrity-spotting, great beaches and its cool Art Deco style.

No one heads to South Beach for a quiet day – or night – out. The South Beach neighbourhood of Miami Beach, popularly known as SoBe, is just as lively and endlessly entertaining as its reputation suggests.

During the day, watch out for the stereotypes on display, from the dudes roller-skating down the sidewalks to the bikinied models posing up a storm on the beach. The white sand beach is, of course, a highlight – and on public holidays such as Memorial Day, you'll be hard pressed to find a free spot to lay down your beach towel, and European-style topless bathing and skimpy bikinis come as standard. If you can take your eyes of the sunbathers for a second, look out for the colourful lifeguard stands which are SoBe icons. The year-round warm waters make this a surfing paradise – lessons are available at the surf and dive schools that line the coast.

Away from the beach, the historic Art Deco architecture on offer is unmissable. The district is home to more than 800 prime examples that were built from the 1920s to 40s in the Mediterranean Revival and Streamlined Modern styles. Look out for The Raleigh Hotel which dates back to 1940 and enjoys a prime beachfront Collins Avenue location.

Miami is one of the best cities in the world for nightlife, and most of the hottest clubs are located in SoBe. If you are in the mood for dancing, and an all-night party, join the rich, famous, and wannabes and beat a path to whatever club is the current place to be. Bring a camera as this is a people-watching paradise thanks to the Lamborghinis, celeb entourages and models, all hanging out, wanting to be seen.

South Beach is on the south end of Collins Avenue and is very walkable. Explore SoBe by foot or use the South Beach Local bus service which is aimed at tourists and costs just a few cents. Tours of the Art Deco District leave from the Art Deco Welcome Centre,
