The lighthouse, established in 1749 at Beavertail Point, was the granddaddy of all Rhode Island lighthouses and only the third one—after Boston Harbor and Nantucket’s Brant Point—in the American colonies.
Today is a museum that features a collection of information, artifacts, and conversation about the history and site of the third-oldest lighthouse in North America. 
The lighthouse is located in Beavertail State Park at the end of Beavertail Road, at the southern tip of Conanicut Island. There is free parking. The grounds are open to the public.
