Relax on a sandy beach and in the mineral water springs at a spa. Explore the city for its historic treasures.

The port city of Mangalia has an interesting past dating back to the Neolithic period. Later, Greeks, Romans and Turks claimed this region. Today, it is a resort area drawing crowds of holiday makers to the northern beach and southern port. Relax on the sand in the hot summer. Take an informative trip to the historic inland attractions.

The city is split into northern and southern sections. Stroll along the northern beach to enjoy the hot summer sands. Swim in the sea and rest beneath a straw umbrella. In the southern part is a marina with a collection of yachts. Stroll along the wooden piers and pick out your favourite vessels.

Attend the Callatis Festival at the harbour in mid-August. It’s one of the country’s largest music festivals.

Several blocks inland from the beach is the Esmahan Sultan Mosque. Read the English fact sheet as you peruse the elegant interior. Ascend to the tower for city views. Amble around the picturesque garden of one of the oldest mosques in the country, dating back to 1573.

Walk northwest for 10 minutes to find the Callatis Archaeological Museum. Learn about the region’s history through its relics from various dynasties. Marvel at the columns, artwork, coins and other items from Roman and Greek rule. Visit the Scythian tomb, where the first Greek papyrus of Romania was found.

The region is among the hottest in Romania, with mild winters and scorching summers. A strong sea breeze refreshes sunbathers year-round.

The town overlooks the Black Sea on the eastern coast of the county of Constanta. It is between the resorts of Vama Veche to the south and Costinesti to the north. The nearest major transportation hub is the Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport, 50 miles (80 kilometres) north of the commune. Ride a minibus from the city of Constanta in less than 1 hour.

The remains of the Roman and Greek empires prevail in the pleasant resort city of Mangalia.
