Memphis was a great city with lots of history, personally I loved the Civil Rights Museum and Graceland amongst other sites, but the city is very poor and there were lots of panhandlers / homeless trying to get a $.

Good shopping outlet malls; saw a Grizzlies NBA game in very nice FedEx stadium, and of course Graceland
The police In Beale Street were so great ! Posed for a photo with our son chatted to him and gave him a badge Beale street was great fun. Heaps of dining opportunities. Loved it all
Go to Speed America museum - small but interesting
Memphis itself seems a bit of a dive, so keep your wits about you. But nowhere near as bad as San Fran or LA, so you should be fine. Make sure you visit Gracelands and Beale Street (during the night.)
