The beautiful Uyuni salt flats or Salar de Uyuni is with its 10.582 square km 4.085 square miles the world’s largest salt flat. It is located in the Department of Potosi in southwest Bolivia, near the crest of the Andes, at 3.650 metres above sea level.

Every November, the Uyuni salt flats is also the breeding grounds for three species of South American flamingos. Isla del Pescado located on the salt flat and full of giant cactuses is named this way as the ´island´ has the shape of a fish. It is the only sign of life for miles.

Discover the Salar de Uyuni on a 2-day tour from Uyuni. Visit the train cemetery, artisan shops, Incahuasi Island, and more. You will be picked up from your hotel and visit the train cemetery, the town of Colchani, the artisan shops, salt processing plants, Incahuasi Island, and have a private lunch in the middle of the salt desert. You will continue your trip towards the southwest, passing through the Siloli desert. You will sleep at the Hotel Tayka del Desierto, a community hotel with a private room, shower, heating and enjoy a delicious local meal.

The beautiful Uyuni salt flats are the world’s largest salt flat. It is located in the Department of Potosi in Southwest Bolivia at 3.650 metres above sea level. Some 40.000 years ago, the area was part of Lake Minchin, a giant prehistoric lake. When the lake dried up, it left behind two modern lakes, Poopó and Uru Uru, and two major salt deserts: Salar de Coipasa and the larger Salar de Uyuni. The Uyuni Salt Flats are roughly 25 times the size of Bonneville Salt Flats in the United States!

Day 2: From Ojo de Perdiz to Uyuni

You will have breakfast at the hotel and continue your trip to visit the stone tree, volcanic geysers, the red lagoon, and the main nesting site for pink flamingos. You will be able to take a bath in the hot waters of Polques, cross the Dali desert and discover the green lagoon. You will travel back to Uyuni on the way you will meet herds of llamas, vicuñas, birds and much more. The arrival in Uyuni is scheduled at around 6 pm and you will be dropped off at the place of your choice.

Early this morning we will get ready to enter the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve. You will visit the Stone Tree and with some luck we will be able to spot vizcachas (wild desert rabbits).
Geiser Sol de la Manana

We will arrive to the Geysers of Sol de Mañana during the most active moment of the day and with the first ray of lights. This is the highest point of the tour (5000 metres above the sea level). It can be very cold here. We will be able to walk among the smoky and noisy geysers, boiling mud stewpot where red and grey mud is boiling like water.

The next stop will be Laguna Colorada (red coloured lagoon). This lagoon is the main nesting centre of the three different species of flamingos. The colour of the water is produced by the presence of algae and plankton activated by the sunlight and the wind.
