What you can expect

Enjoy the scenic views of the Gillies Range as we make our way up through the mountains into the Atherton Tablelands.

Our first stop is Lake Barrine, a beautiful part of Crater Lakes National Park, a serene blue lake surrounded by lush tropical rainforest, Lake Barrine is part of Crater Lakes National Park, Wet Tropics World Heritage tropical rainforest.

The lake is a maar—a volcanic crater formed by massive explosions from the superheating of groundwater. The crater has filled with water, forming a lake 65m deep. Take a refreshing dip and then relax in the shade & take in the scenic views of the lake, whilst we enjoy morning tea.

After enjoying the scenic views of the lake we a lovely short walk amongst the UNESCO World Heritage tropical rainforest. We follow the easy track to the boardwalk to spot fish and freshwater turtles waiting for in the crystal blue and green waters below.

Lookout for the rainforest animals, such as the colourful but cryptic Boyd's forest dragon, along the way, fish, eels and waterbirds along the shallow, reedy edges.

Lunch is at a quaint little cafe nearby, enjoy a delicious lunch made from locally sourced produce whilst sitting on the veranda that overlooks the world heritage rainforest.

Next is the platypus viewing, the calm and subdued lighting conditions at the end of the day enhance the experience, providing a tranquil setting for observing these unique creatures in their natural environment. We have to be patient and maintain a quiet demeanour to avoid disturbing the shy and elusive creatures. Enhance your platypus viewing experience by bringing binoculars and a camera with a telephoto lens. Binoculars allow you to observe these creatures from a distance without disturbing them.
