What you can expect
Explore the Fortifications Museum: the first part presents a series of historical settings accompanied by models, film footage and authentic weapons. It tells a storey that highlights the evolution of fortresses in the Western Alps through the progression of weapons and military strategies.
The second part of the museum is dedicated to the transformations that happened in the latter part of the 19th and the early 20th century. These events place Fort Bard within the system of 19th-century fortresses, with scale models and spectacular reconstructions.
The third and last part poses a question — ‘The Alps, a boundary?’ — enabling visitors to reflect on the museum presentation and the meaning given to the term ‘boundary’: is it a border or a barrier? An obstacle or line of union?
Go up the panoramic route of the Bard Fort to reach the Prisons that are one of the fort’s most fascinating and captivating places. There are 24 very small cells, approximately 1.3 x 2 metres, arranged along four sections preceded by an entrance gallery that has been dedicated to the iconographic representation of the fortress.
