A journey to the north of the state along the Gulf of Mexico highway, through the Emerald Coast, offers a beautiful landscape of beaches, orange plantations, banana trees, sugar cane, and cattle ranches. Along the way, you'll encounter Tajín, the most important pre-Hispanic city of the Totonac culture, known as the “place of thunder.” Covering approximately 12 hectares, it features 168 buildings, with notable structures like the Pyramid of the Niches and Plaza de Arrollo. Tajín has the most ball courts of any pre-Hispanic city, totaling 17. The nearby town of Papantla, famous for its “Papantla Flyers” ritual and vanilla production, is a “Magical Town” known for preserving its traditions and colourful folkloric costumes.
