The 60-square-mile site of Angkor is what remains of an ancient royal Khmer city deep in the jungle of Cambodia. It includes exquisitely detailed temples that were built under the direction of Angkor’s kings from the 9th to the 15th centuries, before being mysteriously abandoned around 1430.

Begin with a visit to the ancient capital of Angkor Thom. Enter through the South Gate and explore Bayon Temple before continuing to Baphuon Temple, the Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Terrace of the Elephants, the Terrace of the Leper King, and Ta Prohm ̶ a beautiful jungle temple that has been relatively untouched since it was discovered.

In the afternoon after lunch time, visit the most famous of all the temples on the plain of Angkor, Angkor Wat. Few places anywhere on Earth match the splendour of Angkor Wat, a veritable lost city in the midst of the Cambodian jungle. The temple complex covers 81 hectares and is comparable in size to the Imperial Palace in Beijing. Its perfection in composition, balance, proportions, and sculptural detail make it one of the finest monuments ever constructed.
