Located on the mountain's summit, Tianmen Mountain Temple has been a pilgrimage site since the Ming Dynasty, and is the Buddhist centre of western Hunan. Also on the mountain are a wealth of rare species of plant, but the mountain is most famous for the rare and marvellous geological formation of Tianmen Cave. Embedded in the towering cliff, this natural wonder has attracted emperors, hermits, dignitaries, and daredevils for centuries. Its exact origin still lacks convincing scientific explanation.
