What you can expect

Venture into a wonderland of ice sculptures and misty waterfalls with a hike that takes you out across the glaciers of southern Iceland. This day-long outing puts you right in the middle of some of the country's most incredible scenery, and makes for a great way to experience the natural spectacle.

A drive takes you out of Reykjavík to the glacier of Eyjafjallajökull, an ice cap that completely covers a volcanic caldera with a summit that rises to 5,417 feet (1,651 m). Just a little farther to the east, the glacier tongue of Sólheimajökull extends through a mountainous ravine from one of the largest glaciers in Iceland, the immense ice cap of Mýrdalsjökull.

Once you arrive, step out and gear up for an easy walk along the glacier. The ice field offers a sweeping view of the frozen scenery, with ice sculptures, volcanic ridges, and deep crevasses carved by these incredible natural forces. On your way back to the city, make 2 last stops to get a look at Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, among the largest and most memorable waterfalls in the country.
