We explore the exciting history and nature of the Phlegraean Fields that surrounds Naples on this day long adventure that starts with grandiose views of the volcano dotted landscape including Lago d’Averno, said to be one of the tributaries of the river Styx. Moving onwards we visit Cumae, the oldest Greek colony in Italy dating back 2,800 years, followed by a stop at one of the most impressive castles in Southern Italy, the Baia Castle, which contains a magnificent archaeological museum complete with ancient relics from the nymphaeum of the emperor Claudius that was plucked from the bottom of the sea in recent decades. We will also enjoy some wine tasting and a light lunch in this stunning region that was known as the summer abode for the ancient elite Rome.
