What you can expect

Skip the line and visit Mitla, the Place of the Dead. Be amazed by its greatest attraction: the varied ornamentation of its buildings, achieved through the system of frets that distinguishes it from the rest of the country.

Mitla is a Mixtec/Zapotec ruin noted for the well-preserved detailed geometric masonry that decorates the buildings. The name Mitla comes from the Nahuatl word Mictlan, which means place of the dead or underworld.

Around the archaeological park you can see a beautiful cactus garden. At the gates of the ruins there is a small folk art craft market attended by attentive vendors willing to offer the best products at the best discounts.

Mitla, an ancient ceremonial centre, includes two cross-shaped tombs, a promenade of strong stone columns, and an elevated suite of ornate rooms once occupied by the Zapotec high priest.
