nce you have purchased your tickets for access to the Gran Cono, you can walk towards the gate where our ascent to the most famous and studied volcano in the world will begin. Vesuvius, 1281 metres in height, is a stratovolcano or a volcano generally conical in shape formed by the overlapping of several layers of solidified lava, pumice and volcanic ash and characterised by highly explosive eruptions. Its eruptive history is linked to catastrophic events starting from 79 AD, the date of the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum, until 1944, the date of its last eruption. It is a volcano of unique strength and impetuosity, but also of prodigious fertility, thanks to the minerals rich in potassium contained in its ash, which have made possible the cultivation of local products such as the cherry tomatoes of Piennolo and the grapes of Lacryma Christi. Vesuvius has been dormant 1944: it sleeps without causing any concern to the local population thanks to the continuous monitoring of the Vesuvian Observatory. Its unmistakable silhouette stands placid along the Gulf of Naples, the symbol of Naples. Let us climb together towards the crater following the uphill path, about a mile and a half long and full of panoramic views.
