Yeah, you will be standing on top of a steaming volcano! Just 4 km below the groundwater is turned into steam. It’s an alluring sight to see and the vivid red colour of the hills around.
Reykjanes Lighthouse
  • 30m
Not far from the Gunnuhver you will find one of Iceland´s oldest lighthouses. It was built in the year 1878 and is 31m (102ft) tall. The lighthouse was damaged severely in a major earthquake in the year 1905. The lighthouse was rebuilt in 1929 and then at a new and in a safer location. There was performed a survey among Icelanders and the Reykjanesvíti Lighthouse was chosen Iceland’s most favourite lighthouse.

One of the most jaw-dropping locations on the Reykjanes Peninsula is the geothermal field of Gunnuhver. It’s located on a restless ground, a huge geothermal area where many of Iceland’s biggest hot mud pools can be found. This pool makes a gigantic amount of steam as it is visible from many kilometres away. The colourful rocks, mineral-painted ground as countless steam vents, hot springs, and furious fumaroles are easily to be a witness at this place.
