Overview
This professionally designed climbing itinerary takes you to the acclimatisation hike to the most popular trekking destination of Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthhar first for the close-up views of Mt. Everest before scaling the Island Peak. It was the name given to the mountain in 1952 by Eric Shipton who thought it to be reminiscent of an island in a sea of ice. It is also known as “Imja Tse” in the local Sherpa language.

The ascent is demanding but the climber gets the most magnificent mountain panorama: Everest, the highest point on the planet at 8,848 m, towers directly ahead and on all sides loom the giants such as Nuptse, Pumori, Chagatse, Lhotse and countless others. We make a quick descent to Gorak Shep and have hot breakfast, and then trek down to Pheriche.

Imja Tse
- 7h
We have allowed two days to climb Island Peak in case of bad weather conditions. The strategy for the climb will be decided by our climbing Sherpa leader at the time, taking into account the group’s acclimatisation, weather, snow conditions, etc. He will provide you ice climbing training to make you skilful on using climbing gears such as ropes, ice pick, harness, crampons etc. In the morning we leave very early for the final climb. This may take between 4-6 hours. Although it is not a technically difficult climb, the snow slopes are crevassed, the headwall is reasonably steep and a head for heights is useful. To reach the summit, willpower and stamina are required. The view from the summit at 6,187 is utterly fantastic! Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Makalu and Baruntse are the dominant giants rising above a sea of smaller peaks. Given good conditions, we should be able to descend back to Chukhung from our summit attempt.
Day 14: Spare Day for Climb in case of Bad Weather
- 1 stop
- Meals: Not included
- Accommodation: Basic guesthouse
Chukhung
- 16h
This day in the itinerary is separated as a spare day. The weather at mountains cannot be predicted as it might change in every other day. In case of extremely bad weather on Day 14, you can summit the peak on this day. However, the weather might work in our favour most of the times. In such cases, you can continue to trek and utilise this day to rest or to relax yourself anywhere in the trail until you reach Lukla. Since the flights from Lukla to Kathmandu is pre-booked, the immediate changes may not be possible especially during the peak seasons.
Day 15: Trek to Tengboche (3,860 m/12,664 ft) - 6 to 7 hours
- 1 stop
- Meals: breakfast, lunch, snacks
- Accommodation: Basic guesthouse
Tengboche Gompa
- 16h
Leaving the mountains behind us, our descent takes us through various towns of Dingboche, Orsho, Shomare and Lower Pangboche to reach the suspension bridge over the Imja Khola River to ascend gradually through Debuche and then to Tengboche.
Day 16: Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,441 m/ 11,289 ft) via Khumjung (3,780 m/12,401 ft) - 5 to 6 hours
- 1 stop
- Meals: breakfast, lunch, snacks
- Accommodation: Guesthouse
Namche Bazaar
- 16h
From Tengboche, we descend steeply through beautiful forests of juniper, rhododendron and fir to Phunki Tenga. After a welcome break and a cup of tea, we cross the Dudh Kosi River and climb to Trashinga. From here the trail contours high above the valley through to Shanasa, where we have the option of visiting Kunde and Khumjung villages before returning to Namche Bazaar – our stop for the night.
Day 17: Trek to Lukla (2,804 m/9,199 ft) - 6 to 7 hours
- 1 stop
- Meals: breakfast, lunch, snacks
- Accommodation: Guesthouse
Lukla
- 16h
This is our last day of trekking as we return to Lukla where the trek began. We enjoy this time to reflect on the trek as a group and the personal achievement of all those who took part. The afternoon is free, so you can wander about, relax and enjoy a hot shower! In the evening, have a few celebratory drinks and dance with your trekmates.
Day 18: Morning Flight from Lukla to Kathmandu
- 1 stop
- Meals: breakfast, snacks
- Accommodation: Three-star hotel
Tenzing-Hillary Airport
