Start at the State Opera House, an impressive building with an equally impressive company of performing singers. It’s history dates back to the 1860s when it was first called the Vienna Court Opera. The name was altered by the Habsburgs in 1920, at the time that the early Austrian Republic was being formed. This is the home for pieces such as La Traviata, La Clemenza di Tito, and Verdi’s Don Carlo, and has hosted many very famous directors, like Gustav Mahler, Herbert von Karajan and Claudio Abbado. See the Mozart Monument and the beautiful facades of the 2, the Art History Museum and the Hofburg, for centuries the opulent home of the Habsburg Empire. Pass the Michaelertor gate and get a look at the Church of St. Michael, or Michaelerkirche, the official church of the Emperors for years. See the Graben Street, or “Der Graben'', dating back to the Roman Empire and once used by Richard Lionheart to enter the city.
